The Regiment’s 4th Draft embarked the SS Cretic in Halifax, Nova Scotia

 

 

Mar 5, 1918

Disembarked in England and proceeded to Bramshott where the draft was Taken On Strength of the 4th Reserve Battalion to continue training

 

May 31, 1918

Sentenced to 7 Days Field Punishment No. 2 and forfeited 2 days pay for being absent from May 29 to May 30, 1918

 

Jun 4, 1918

Sentenced to 21 Days Field Punishment No. 2, 4 months restricted pay and forfeited 3 days pay for being absent from May 31 while a defaulter until June 2, 1918 when he was apprehended by civil police in London.

 

Jun 9, 1918

Admitted to the Canadian Special Hospital in Witley with a diagnosis that reads VDS (Venereal Disease Syphilis)

Transferred to the Eastern Ontario Regimental Depot for pay purposes while in hospital

 

Jun 19, 1918

Discharged to duty from hospital and transferred to the 4th Reserve Battalion in Bramshott

 

Aug 8, 1918

Sentenced to 28 days Field Punishment No. 2, restricted pay for 6 months and forfeited 5 days pay for being absent from July 31 to August 4, 1918

 

Aug 13, 1918

Sentenced to 7 days CB (Confined to Barracks) for being absent from PT Parade

 

Sep 21, 1918

Transferred to the 1st Battalion

 

Sep 23, 1918

Arrived at the CBD (Canadian Base Depot) in Etaples, France and Taken On Strength of the 1st Battalion

 

Sep 25, 1918

After leaving the base depot, he joined the CCRC (Canadian Corps Reinforcement Camp) in Aubin St. Vaast

 

Sep 29, 1918

While still at the reinforcement camp, he was diverted and transferred to the 21st Battalion

 

Oct 2, 1918

After leaving the reinforcement camp, Private Arpan joined the 21st Battalion on the Hindenburg Support Line, west of Cambrai, France and was posted to “A” Company and employed as a cook

 

Nov 9, 1918

While the battalion was moving from Baisieux, Belgium to Frameries, Private Arpan disappeared and was declared to be absent

 

Dec 14, 1918

A Court of Enquiry was held by the officers of the 21st Battalion and Private Arpan was declared to be illegally absent and deficient in his kit

 

Jan 14, 1919

Private Arpan was arrested by military police in Dour, Belgium.  He was turned over to an escort from the 21st Battalion

 

Mar 13, 1919

Private Arpan was tried by Field General Court Martial and charged with

1.     Desertion in that he absented himself on November 9, 1918 until he was apprehended by military police January 14, 1919

2.     Losing by neglect his arms and equipment and regimental necessaries to the value of £8.11.8

He entered a plea of Not Guilty of the 1st charge and Guilty of the 2nd charge.

After testimony was given by witnesses and the accused, he was found Not Guilty of Desertion, but Guilty of a secondary charge of Absent Without Leave, and Guilty of losing his equipment.

He was sentenced to 1 year In Hard Labour.  Upon review, this sentence was reduced to 70 Days Field Punishment No. 2

 

Apr 3, 1919

Embarked the Western Australia in Havre, France

 

On arrival in England, he was attached to “P” Wing in Witley pending return to Canada

 

May 5, 1919

Transferred to the Eastern Ontario Regimental Depot in Seaford

 

Jul 2, 1919

Embarked the SS Olympic in Southampton

 

 

Jul 8, 1919

Disembarked in Halifax, Nova Scotia and proceeded to London, Ontario where he was Taken On Strength Military District No. 1

 

Jul 11, 1919

Discharged from the CEF in London, Ontario

Ø  Rank on discharge Private

Ø  War Service Badge Class “A” issued number 263605

Ø  Proposed residence on discharge London, Ontario

Following his discharge, the British War Medal and Victory Medals were sent to him at 829 Ouellette Ave., Windsor, Ontario

 

Oct 14, 1959

John Arpan died while a patient of the Grace Hospital in Windsor, Ontario and was buried in the St. Alphonsus Cemetery in Windsor
