Aug 21, 1916

The 124th Battalion Embarked the SS Cameronia in Halifax, Nova Scotia on August 7 and Lieutenant Evans’ name appears on the embarkation roll.  However, his service file states that he embarked the SS Olympic on August 21, 1916 with a different unit.

Disembarked in Liverpool, England and was posted to the General List of Officers

 

Oct 26, 1916

Transferred to the 21st Battalion

 

Oct 27, 1916

Arrived at the CBD (Canadian Base Depot) in the Rouelles Camp, Havre, France and Taken On Strength of the 21st Battalion

 

Oct 31, 1916

After leaving the base depot, Lieutenant Evans joined the 21st Battalion resting in Calonne, France

 

Dec 11, 1916

Proceeded on the Lewis Machine Gun Course

 

Dec 17, 1916

Rejoined the battalion in Calonne, France from the machine gun course

 

Apr 9, 1917

During the attack on Vimy Ridge, Lieutenant Evans, with the aid of 1 other soldier, captured 30 German prisoners

 

Apr 23, 1917

During the night of April 23/24, the 21st Battalion moved into the front line north of the town of Farbus, France and immediately came under German shell fire.  Lieutenant Evans received a severe wound that fractured his right leg from the explosion of a high explosive 5.9 inch enemy shell.  He was evacuated to the No. 23 CCS (Casualty clearing Station) where surgery was performed to remove shell fragments and set the fracture.

 

Apr 26, 1917

Transferred via the No. 17 AT (Ambulance Train) and admitted to the No. 9 British Red Cross Hospital in Calais, France

 

Jul 22, 1917

Discharged from hospital and invalided to England aboard the Hospital Ship Brighton

 

On arrival in England, he was admitted to the Royal Free Hospital, London

Transferred to the EORD (Eastern Ontario Regimental Depot) for pay purposes while in hospital

 

Oct 17, 1917

Embarked the Hospital Ship Araguaya in Liverpool

 

 

Oct 26, 1917

Disembarked in Halifax, Nova Scotia and proceeded to Toronto, Ontario where he was Taken On Strength of Military District No. 2 Depot and admitted to the Ontario Convalescent Hospital as an out-patient

 

Jul 5, 1918

Admitted to the Toronto General Hospital for ongoing care of his wounded right leg

 

Aug 22, 1918

Surgery performed to remove dead bone and infected tissue

 

Sep 18, 1918

Transferred to the Ontario Convalescent Hospital as an out patient

 

Nov 30, 1918

Transferred to the Military Wing, Toronto General Hospital

 

Feb 15, 1919

Transferred to the Spadina Military Hospital in Toronto

 

Jul 4, 1919

Transferred to the St. Andrew’s Military Hospital in Toronto

 

Sep 17, 1919

Transferred to the DOH (Dominion Orthopedic Hospital) Christie St., Toronto where additional surgeries were performed to repair damage and allow drainage of the wound

 

Dec 14, 1919

Discharged from the CEF in Toronto, Ontario

Ø  Rank on discharge Lieutenant

Ø  Entitled to War Service Badge Class “A”

Ø  Proposed residence on discharge Bradford, Ontario

He was discharged to the care of the Dept. of SCR (Soldier’s Civil Re-establishment)

Following his discharge he continued his studies and obtained a law degree at Osgood Hall, Toronto.  The British War Medal and Victory Medals were sent to him at 144 St. George St., Toronto, Ontario

 

Jul 18, 1967

Graham Thomas Evans died in Ormond Beach, Florida, USA and was buried in the Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Bradford, Ontario
