He lied about his age, as he stated his birth year to be 1896

Embarked the SS Lapland at Halifax Nova Scotia

Disembarked at Liverpool England

 

Jul 7, 1916

Transferred to the 39th Reserve Battalion

 

Sep 10, 1916

Transferred to the 21st Battalion

 

Sep 11, 1916

Arrived at CBD (Canadian Base Depot) at Havre France and TOS (Taken On Strength) the 21st Battalion 

He would have joined the 21st Battalion in the field at some point after this date

 

Nov 3, 1917            Killed in Action

Because his body was either not recovered, or if recovered, never identified, he is commemorated on the Menin Gate, Ypres Belgium


 

Below, Herman (on left) with his brother Harry Firby, who also lied about his age in order to enlist underage.  Even though the brothers both enlisted in the 70th Battalion, Harry was sent to a battalion other than the 21st.  There is no record of Harry being killed, and I assume that he returned to Canada after the war.
