In the spring of 1916, the 109th Battalion moved to Camp Borden near Barrie, Ontario for advanced training

In early July 1916, the battalion moved to the Barriefield Camp, Kingston, Ontario

Jul 31, 1916

Disembarked in Liverpool, England and proceeded to the Bordon Camp, near Longmoor, Hampshire

 

Aug 16, 1916

The battalion moved to Bramshott to continue training

 

Oct 5, 1916

Transferred to the 21st Battalion

 

Oct 6, 1916

Arrived at the CBD (Canadian Base Depot) in the Rouelles Camp, Havre, France and Taken On Strength of the 21st Battalion

 

Oct 22, 1916

After leaving the base depot, Private Gale joined the 21st Battalion resting in Divion, France

 

May 20, 1917

After being classified TB (Temporary Base) meaning he was temporarily unfit for front line duty, he was transferred to the Canadian Base Depot in Havre, France

 

Jul 6, 1917

Transferred to the 1st Canadian Labour Battalion

 

Jul 7, 1917

After leaving the base depot, Private Gale joined the 1st Canadian Labour Battalion in Peronne, France

 

Sep 22, 1917

While in camp near Cherisy, France, enemy aircraft bombed the area and Private Gale received wounds to his hips, buttocks, and legs.  He was evacuated to the 12th Field Ambulance for first aid before being transferred to the No. 4 CCS (Casualty Clearing Station)

 

Sep 24, 1917

Transferred via the No. 3 AT (Ambulance Train) and admitted to the No. 11 USA General Hospital in Camiers, France

 

Oct 1, 1917

Invalided to England aboard the Hospital Ship Ville de Liege

 

On arrival in England, he was admitted to the Reading War Hospital

Transferred to the 1st CORD (Central Ontario Regimental Depot) for pay purposes while in hospital

 

Nov 30, 1917

Transferred to the Military Convalescent Hospital in Woodcote Park, Epsom

 

Dec 6, 1917

Transferred to the No. 12 Canadian General Hospital in Bramshott for hernia treatment.  When he was wounded, he was wearing a truss for a hernia that he had prior to enlisting, and it was destroyed during the bombing raid.  He was transferred here to have a new truss issued.

 

Dec 12, 1917

Transferred back to the Military Convalescent Hospital in Epsom after being fitted with a new truss

 

Jan 7, 1918

Discharged from hospital and reported to the Central Ontario Regimental Depot

Attached to the 12th Reserve Battalion in East Sandling

Transferred to the Canadian General Depot in Shorncliffe

Transferred to the CDD (Canadian Discharge Depot) in Buxton pending return to Canada

Embarked the SS Olympic in Liverpool

 

 

Mar 20, 1918

Disembarked in Halifax, Nova Scotia and proceeded to Toronto, Ontario where he was Taken On Strength of Military District No. 2 Casualty Company

 

Apr 11, 1918

Discharged from the CEF in Toronto, Ontario
