France, Lieutenant Gardiner received a machine gun bullet wound to his right
leg and was evacuated to a field ambulance for first aid before being transported
to the No. 47 CCS (Casualty Clearing Station)
At the same time, the
Commanding Officer, L/Col EW Jones had been wounded and as Lieutenant Gardiner
was being carried past the wounded officer, he gave up his stretcher to allow
L/Col Jones to be evacuated. L/Col EW
Jones, DSO died shortly after.
