While inspecting a hospital in Ramsgate with Captain James Sutherland, a German Gotha bombed the hospital they were inspecting, killing 2 men and injuring several others.  Sergeant Godwin was not injured.

Note, Captain Sutherland was an acclaimed hockey player and the future founder of the International Hockey Hall of Fame in Kingston, Ontario
