Embarked the SS Olympic in Halifax, Nova Scotia

 

 

Jun 9, 1917

Disembarked in Liverpool, England and the battalion proceeded to Seaford where it was absorbed into the 6th Reserve Battalion to continue training

 

Aug 11, 1917

Sentenced to 7 days CB (Confined to Barracks) for overstaying a pass and forfeited 1 day’s pay

 

Oct 26, 1917

Transferred to the 21st Battalion

 

Oct 27, 1917

Arrived at the No. 2 CIBD (Canadian Infantry Base Depot) in Etaples, France and Taken On Strength of the 21st Battalion

 

Oct 30, 1917

After leaving the base depot, he joined the CC Rein C (Canadian Corps Reinforcement Camp) in Calonne Ricouart, France

 

Nov 20, 1917

After leaving the reinforcement camp, Private Gross joined the 21st Battalion in Camblain L’Abbe, France and was posted to 14 Platoon, “D” Company

 

Dec 1, 1917

Attached to the 182nd Company, Royal Engineers, for duty

 

Dec 21, 1917

Rejoined the 21st Battalion in billets in Auchy-au-Bois, France from duty with the engineers

 

Apr 3, 1918

While in the front line north-west of Neuville Vitasse, France, Private Gross was cleaning his rifle when it discharged and the bullet passed through his left hand.  He was taken to the No. 6 CFA (Canadian Field Ambulance) for first aid before being transported to a casualty clearing station.  He was transferred the same day to the No. 6 Stationary Hospital in Frevent, France

He was charged with negligently causing a self inflicted wound and ordered to be held in custody

 

May 15, 1918

Transferred to the No. 10 General Hospital in Rouen, France

While in hospital the FGCM (Field General Court Martial) was held and Private Gross was charged with

Ø  Conduct to the prejudice of good order and military discipline in wounding himself through negligently handling a rifle

Evidence was given that he had removed the magazine and proceeded to clean the rifle when it discharged.  The bullet passed through his left hand that was holding the rifle by the muzzle.  Evidence also indicated that the incident was not intentional.

He was found guilty and sentenced to 42 days Field Punishment No. 1

 

Jun 21, 1918

Discharged from hospital and was transferred to the Field Punishment Compound in Etaples, France to serve his sentence

Transferred to the Canadian Infantry Base Depot for pay purposes while serving his sentence

 

Jul 3, 1918

Discharged from the punishment compound and reported to the Canadian Corps Reinforcement Camp in Aubin St. Vaast, France and Taken On Strength of the 21st Battalion

 

Aug 7, 1918

After leaving the reinforcement camp, Private Gross rejoined the 21st Battalion west of Marcelcave, France

 

Nov 15, 1918

Granted 14 days leave

 

Nov 22, 1918

Admitted to the Detention Hospital in Rome, Italy with a diagnosis that reads P. Epidemic Fever

It appears that he went home while on leave.

 

Nov 24, 1918

Discharged from hospital

 

Nov 29, 1918

Declared to be AWL (Absent Without Leave) when he failed to return from leave

 

Apr 3, 1919

Transferred to the Canadian Records List for records purposes when the 21st Battalion proceeded to England

 

Dec 20, 1919

A Court of Inquiry was held in London, England and he was declared to be illegally absent from November 29, 1918 and Struck Off the Strength of the CEF as a Deserter
