Disembarked in Plymouth, England and proceeded to Shorncliffe where the draft was absorbed into the 39th Reserve Battalion to continue training and was posted to “E” Company

 

His wife, Isabel, followed him to England and resided at 16 Louise Road, Water Lane, Stratford, London, England

Transferred to “C” Company.  On this same day, he was reported to be AWL (Absent Without Leave)

Private Hawkins reported to the 39th Reserve Battalion Guard Room and taken into custody from being absent

 

Apr 25, 1916

Tried by District Court Martial in East Sandling and charged with

 

1.     Being absent without leave from February 4, 1916 until he surrendered April 13, 1916

2.     Losing by neglect a number of items of kit

He entered a plea of Guilty on both charges and after testimony was given, he was sentenced to 112 Days Detention

Sentenced to 5 days Field Punishment No. 2 for an unrecorded offence

Transferred to the 21st Battalion

 

Oct 5, 1916

Arrived at the CBD (Canadian Base Depot) and Taken On Strength of the 21st Battalion

After leaving the base depot, Private Hawkins joined the 21st Battalion in billets in Divion, France

 

Jan 17, 1917

During a large trench raid by the battalion on the German line at Calonne, France, Private Hawkins received a bullet wound to his left shoulder and was evacuated to a field ambulance for first aid being transported to a casualty clearing station

Transferred to the No. 22 General Hospital in Camiers, France

 

Jan 24, 1917

Invalided to England aboard the Hospital Ship Newhaven

 

On arrival in England, he was admitted to the Norfolk War Hospital in Thorpe, Norwich
