During an advance at Avesnes-le-Sec the Battalion was involved in hand to hand combat and Pte Hill received a severe wound to his left hand from a German bayonet.  He was treated at the RAP (Regimental Aid Post) before being sent to No 9 CFA (Canadian Field Ambulance)

Transferred to No 1 CCS (Casualty Clearing Station).  Surgery was performed to repair nerve and tendon damage
