After leaving the reinforcement camp, Private Hughes joined the 21st Battalion on the south side of the Arras – Cambrai Road, south east of Vis en Artois, France and was posted to “B” Company

During the capture of Iwuy, France, Private Hughes received a shrapnel wound to his left hand and was evacuated to the No. 9 CFA (Canadian Field Ambulance) for first aid

Transferred to the No. 1 CCS (Casualty Clearing Station) where a shrapnel ball was removed from his hand

 

Oct 13, 1918

Transferred to the 2nd Australian General Hospital in Wimereux, France

Invalided to England aboard the Hospital Ship Jan Breydel

 

On arrival in England, he was admitted to the Berrington War Hospital in Shrewsbury

Transferred to the EORD (Eastern Ontario Regimental Depot) for pay purposes while in hospital

Transferred to the Military Convalescent Hospital in Woodcote Parke, Epsom
