While attempting to cross the Erclin River west of Iwuy, France, Private MacDonald received a shrapnel wound to his right arm and was evacuated to the No. 9 CFA (Canadian Field Ambulance) for first aid before being transported to the No. 1 CCS (Casualty Clearing Station)

Transferred to the No. 14 Canadian Field Ambulance

Transferred to the No. 53 General Hospital in Boulogne, France

Transferred to the No. 2 Native Labour General Hospital in Boulogne
