Medical exam for the MSA (Military Service Act) of 1917 held at Kingston, Ontario

Conscripted into the 1st Depot Battalion, EOR (Eastern Ontario Regiment) under the MSA in Kingston

 Ø  Number 3055353

Ø  Next of kin given as Annie Manion, mother, Almonte, Ontario

Ø  Previous occupation given as Druggist

Ø  No previous military experience given

Ø  Religion given as Roman Catholic

Ø  Posted to the 3rd Regimental Draft

On being conscripted, he gave his birth date as August 22, 1897, not his actual birth date of October 22, 1896

 

Feb 21, 1918

The 3rd Regimental Draft embarked the SS Melita in Halifax, Nova Scotia

 

 

Mar 4, 1918

Disembarked in Liverpool, England and proceeded to Seaford where the draft was absorbed into the 6th Reserve Battalion to continue training

 

Aug 9, 1918

Transferred to the 21st Battalion

Arrived at the CIBD (Canadian Infantry Base Depot) in Etaples, France and Taken On Strength of the 21st Battalion

 

Aug 15, 1918

After leaving the base depot, Private Manion joined the 21st Battalion near Fouquescourt, France and was posted to “A” Company

 

Aug 26, 1918

During fighting south of Achicourt, France, Private Manion was reported to be 1 of 69 men Missing In Action. 

After being reported as being Missing In Action, Private Manion was reported to be safe and at duty with the battalion.  There is no explanation in the file as to where he had been or his condition.  It is assumed that he got separated in the confusion and later found his own lines.

Dec 13, 1918

The 21st Battalion led the 2nd Canadian Division across the Bonn Bridge to enter Germany as part of the Occupying Force and proceeded to Sieburg

 

 

Mar 9, 1919

Proceeded to Namur, Belgium on Guard Duty

 

Apr 3, 1919

Embarked the Western Australia in Havre, France

 

On arrival in England, he was attached to “P” Wing in Witley pending return to Canada

 

May 14, 1919

Embarked the SS Caronia in Liverpool

 

 

May 22, 1919

Disembarked in Halifax, Nova Scotia and proceeded to Kingston, Ontario by train

 

May 24, 1919

Discharged from the CEF in Kingston, Ontario

 Ø  Rank on discharge Lance Corporal

Ø  War Service Badge Class “A” issued number 279913

Ø  Proposed residence on discharge Almonte, Ontario

Following his discharge, the British War Medal and Victory Medals were sent to him c/o Fraser and Swarts, Renfrew, Ontario

Angus Manion went on to graduate from the Ontario College of Pharmacy

Angus John Manion died in a Welland Ontario Hospital and was buried in the Saint Mary’s Cemetery, Almonte, Ontario
