Transferred to the 156th Battalion, then the same day was transferred to the 6th Reserve Battalion in Seaford

 

Mar 22, 1917

Reverted to the rank of Private at his own request

 

Apr 21, 1917

Transferred to the 21st Battalion

 

Apr 22, 1917

Arrived at the CBD (Canadian Base Depot) in the Rouelles Camp, Havre, France and Taken On Strength of the 21st Battalion

 

May 21, 1917

After leaving the base depot, Private McMahon joined the 21st Battalion in the support trench on Vimy Ridge, France

 

Aug 9, 1917

During a raid on the German trench at Lens, France, Private McMahon received a shrapnel wound to his right shoulder and was evacuated to a field ambulance for first aid before being transported to the No. 23 CCS (Casualty Clearing Station) for treatment.  He was then transported to the No. 22 General Hospital in Camiers, France

Invalided to England aboard the Hospital Ship Brighton

 

On arrival in England, he was admitted to the 2nd Western Hospital in Manchester

Transferred to the EORD (Eastern Ontario Regimental Depot) for pay purposes while in hospital

 

Sep 29, 1917

Transferred to the Dublin Castle Red Cross Hospital, Dublin, Ireland

 

Oct 12, 1917

Transferred to the Canadian Convalescent Hospital in Bromley

 

Oct 26, 1917

Discharged from hospital and attached to the 3rd CCD (Canadian Command Depot) for physical training and exercise

 

Jan 3, 1918

Discharged from the command depot and transferred to the 6th Reserve Battalion in Seaford

 

Feb 22, 1918

Awarded the Good Conduct Badge

 

Apr 11, 1918

Transferred to the 21st Battalion

Arrived at the No. 2 CIBD (Canadian Infantry Base Depot) in Etaples, France and Taken On Strength of the 21st Battalion

After leaving the base depot, he joined the CC Rein C (Canadian Corps Reinforcement Camp) in Calonne Ricouart, France

After leaving the reinforcement camp, Private McMahon rejoined the 21st Battalion in the front line near Mercatel, France

 

Dec 13, 1918

The 21st Battalion crossed the Bonn Bridge to enter Germany as part of the Occupying Force and proceeded to Seigburg

 

 

Apr 3, 1919

Embarked the Western Australia in Havre, France

 

On arrival in England, he was attached to “P” Wing in Witley pending return to Canada

 

May 12, 1919

Joseph McMahon was tried by a Court Martial and charged with

 1.     While on active service on or about 2145 hours on May 8, 1919 at the Witley Camp, created a disturbance by kicking at the door of the Witley Tobacco Stores endeavoring to enter

2.     Alternate charge of While on active service on or about 2145 hours on May 8, 1919 joined in a crowd which unlawfully entered the Witley Tobacco Stores and obtained tobacco cigarettes.

He was found guilty of the 1st charge and sentenced to 56 days detention

Transferred to the Eastern Ontario Regimental Depot for records purposes while in detention

 

Jun 28, 1919

On being released from detention, he was posted to “M” Wing in Witley pending return to Canada

 

Jul 5, 1919

Embarked the SS Carmania in Liverpool

 

 

Jul 12, 1919

Disembarked in Halifax, Nova Scotia and proceeded to Ottawa, Ontario where he was Taken On Strength Military District No. 3 Casualty Company in Ottawa

 

Jul 15, 1919

Discharged from the CEF in Ottawa, Ontario

Ø  Rank on discharge Private

Ø  War Service Badge Class “A” issued number 382100

Ø  Proposed residence on discharge RR #1 Finch, Ontario

Following his discharge, the British War Medal and Victory Medals were sent to him at RR #1 Finch, Ontario

Joseph Michael McMahon died and was buried in the St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Cemetery, Chesterville, Ontario
