In early July 1916, the battalion moved to the Barriefield Camp, Kingston, Ontario

Embarked the SS Olympic in Halifax, Nova Scotia

 

 

Jul 31, 1916

Disembarked in Liverpool, England and proceeded to the Bordon Camp, near Longmoor, Hampshire

 

Aug 16, 1916

The battalion moved to Bramshott to continue training

 

Oct 5, 1916

Transferred to the 21st Battalion

 

Oct 6, 1916

Arrived at the CBD (Canadian Base Depot) in the Rouelles Camp, Havre, France and Taken On Strength of the 21st Battalion

 

Oct 22, 1916

After leaving the base depot, Private Metcalfe joined the 21st Battalion resting in Bully Grenay, France

 

Aug 16, 1917

During severe fighting at Hill 70, near Lens, France Private Metcalfe was wounded slightly in his face from a piece of shrapnel and evacuated to the No. 4 CFA (Canadian Field Ambulance) for first aid before being transported to the No. 6 CCS (Casualty Clearing Station)

 

Sep 4, 1917

Discharged from the casualty clearing station and rejoined the 21st Battalion resting in the Suburban Camp, Villers au Bois, France

 

Nov 13, 1917

Granted 10 days leave

 

Nov 29, 1917

Rejoined the 21st Battalion resting in the Suburban Camp at Villers au Bois from leave

 

Dec 8, 1917

Attached to the 182nd Company, Royal Engineers for duty

 

Jan 31, 1918

Rejoined the 21st Battalion in billets in Camblain L’Abbe, France from duty with the engineers

 

Mar 3, 1918

Attached to the 1st Canadian Tunnelling Company for duty

 

Mar 10, 1918

Rejoined the 21st Battalion resting in Gouy Servins, France from the tunnelling company duty

 

Apr 13, 1918

Attached to the 2nd Canadian Machine Gun Battalion for duty

Transferred to the 2nd Canadian Machine Gun Battalion for permanent duty

 

Sep 15, 1918

Charles Norman Metcalfe was instantly killed by an enemy shell while in action north west of Baralle, France and was buried a short time later in the Sun Quarry Cemetery, Cherisy, France

 

Following the end of the war, the British War Medal and Victory Medals were sent to his friend, Mrs. Linda Hill, 207 Park St., Peterborough, Ontario.  His will had left his belongings to her.

The Plaque (Dead Man’s Penny below) and Scroll were sent to his father, Mr. George Metcalfe, Fenelon Falls, Ontario

 

The Memorial Cross was sent to his mother, Mrs. George Metcalfe, Fenelon Falls, Ontario

 

Charles Metcalfe is remembered on the War Memorial in Fenelon Falls, Ontario
