May 9, 1917

Sergeant Pauley and his company were under the command of the 20th Battalion in the front line near Arleux en Gohelle, east of Vimy Ridge, France when they attempted a counter attack which failed.  Sergeant Philip Pauley was killed during this action and was buried by members of the 20th Battalion in a nearby field.  When the war ended, his remains could not be located and his name is engraved on the Canadian National Vimy Memorial, Vimy Ridge, France for those killed during the war in France with no known grave.

 

 
Following the war the 1914-15 Star, British War Medal, Victory Medal, Plaque (Dead Man’s Penny shown below) and Scroll were sent to his father, George H. Pauley, 89 Octavia St., Belleville, Ontario

 

The Memorial Cross was sent to his mother, Mrs. Annie Pauley, at the same address
