Jun 27, 1916

Sentenced to 10 days detention and forfeited a total of 25 days’ pay for being Absent Without Leave

 

Aug 18, 1916

Because he was under age he was transferred to the No. 3 Special Service Company in Kingston prior to the battalion sailing for England

 

May 26, 1917

He was now considered old enough to proceed to England and was transferred to the 254th Battalion in Belleville, Ontario

 

Jun 2, 1917

Embarked the SS Olympic in Halifax, Nova Scotia

 

  

Jun 9, 1917

Disembarked in Liverpool, England and the battalion proceeded to Seaford where it was absorbed into the 6th Reserve Battalion to continue training

 

Nov 14, 1917

Private Phillips was transferred to the 21st Battalion and arrived at the No. 2 CIBD (Canadian Infantry Base Depot) in Etaples, France as part of a draft of 12 reinforcements from England and was TOS (Taken On Strength) the 21st Battalion.

 

Nov 17, 1917

After leaving the base depot he joined the CC Rein C (Canadian Corps Reinforcement Camp) in Calonne Ricouart

 

Dec 2, 1917

After leaving the reinforcement camp, Private Phillips joined the 21st Battalion resting in the Suburban Camp near Villers au Bois, France

 

Jan 19, 1918

Attached to the 1st Canadian Tunnelling Company for duty

 

Jan 31, 1918

Rejoined the battalion from the tunnelling company.

 

Apr 27, 1918

While in the front-line trench near Neuville Vitasse, Private Phillips was fatally wounded while acting as a stretcher bearer  and died shortly after.  He was later buried in the Bellacourt Military Cemetery, Bellacourt, France

 

 
Following the war, the British War Medal, Victory Medal, Plaque (Dead Man’s Penny) and Scroll were sent to his father, Mr. D. Phillips, Madoc, Ontario

 
There was no Memorial Cross issued as his mother had pre-deceased him

 

Herbert Phillips is honoured on the Madoc, Ontario War Memorial
