Transferred to the 39th Reserve Battalion at West Sandling

Reverted to the rank of Private in order to proceed to France

Arrived at the CBD (Canadian Base Depot) at the Rouelles Camp, Havre France and TOS (Taken On Strength) the 21st Battalion

Joined the 21st Battalion.  The Battalion had just come out of the front line and he most likely joined them when they arrived at the Brickfields at Albert, before they moved into billets at nearby Bouzincourt

Appointed to rank of Lance Corporal to replace L/Cpl Clarke 454603, who had been promoted

 

Dec 11, 1916

Proceeded on the Gas Course

 

Dec 16, 1916

Rejoined the Battalion from the Gas Course

 

Jan 17, 1917

Appointed to rank of Acting Corporal with pay to replace Cpl Cuyler 59231, who had been promoted

 

Feb 25, 1917

Proceeded on the Lewis Gun and Bombing Course

 

Apr 9, 1917

Promoted to the rank of Sergeant to replace Sgt Mackinnon, 469049, who had proceeded to England to receive a Commission

 

Aug 15, 1917

Admitted to the No 4 CFA (Canadian Field Ambulance) with machine gun bullet wounds to his right wrist and left shoulder.  He was transferred the same day to the No 23 CCS (Casualty Clearing Station). 

This happened during the heavy fighting for Hill 70.  Sgt Phillips was recommended for the Military Medal for his actions.  See the Medal Citation below.

Transferred to the No 5 Convalescent Depot at Cayeux

 

Sep 20, 1917

Arrived at the CIBD (Canadian Infantry Base Depot) at Etaples and posted to “A” Company for those recovering from wounds and illness

Proceeded to the 2nd Entrenching Battalion at Hersin and then proceeded directly to the CC Rein C (Canadian Corps Reinforcement Camp) at Villers au Bois

 

Nov 2, 1917

Awarded the Military Medal per London Gazette #30364

 

 

 

Nov 6, 1917

Left the CC Rein C to join the 21st Battalion.  Due to heavy shelling in the Poperinghe and Ypres area that lasted for several days, the detail of reinforcements was forced to take cover for several days while enroute

 

Nov 19, 1917

Rejoined the 21st Battalion when they moved into their billets at Camblain L’Abbe after the heavy fighting at Passchendaele.  He was part of a draft of 95 reinforcements

 

Nov 24, 1917

Granted 14 days leave

 

Dec 1, 1917

Appointed as the “C” Company Quartermaster Sergeant to replace CQMS S Thomas, 59969 who had been promoted

 

Dec 10, 1917

Rejoined the Battalion from leave

 

Dec 23, 1918

Arrived at the CC Rein C at Aubin St Vaast

 

Jan 5, 1919

Proceeded to join the 21st Battalion at Neunkirchen Germany

 

Apr 3, 1919

Embarked the Western Australia at Havre

TOS “P” Wing at Witley pending return to Canada

Embarked the RMS Caronia at Liverpool

Disembarked at Halifax Nova Scotia and proceeded to Kingston Ontario by train

Funeral held at Windsor Ontario.  The Honorary Paul Bearers are listed as Archie Shields, Reg Dew, Harry Ranson, Wilf Day and Al Littlefair, all 21st Battalion veterans.  CQMS Peter Phillips was buried in the Windsor Grove Cemetery there.
