The battalion trained in the Belleville, Ontario area

 

Jun 17, 1915

Embarked the SS Missanabie in Montreal, Quebec

 

 

Jul 3, 1915

Disembarked in Plymouth, England and proceeded to Shorncliffe and then on to Lydd to continue training

 

Sep 24, 1915

The 39th Battalion moved to West Sandling to continue training

 
The battalion was renamed as the 39th Reserve Battalion

 

Nov 18, 1915

Transferred to the 21st Battalion

 

Nov 19, 1915

Arrived at the CBD (Canadian Base Depot) in the Rouelles Camp, Havre, France and TOS (Taken On Strength) the 21st Battalion

 

Nov 30, 1915

Private Powell joined the 21st Battalion in the front-line trench near La Clytte, Belgium

 

Jun 24, 1916

While in the 33 to 38 front line trench system on the Ypres Salient, Private Powell received a bullet wound to his head and was evacuated to the No. 5 CFA (Canadian Field Ambulance) where he died as a result of his wounds.  He was buried in the nearby Bedford House Military Cemetery, Zillebeke, Belgium.

Following the war, the 1914-15 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medals were sent to his brother, A.W. Powell, RR #3 Oshawa, Ontario

 
The Plaque (Dead Man’s Penny) and Scroll were sent to his father, James Powell, at the same address

 
The Memorial Cross was sent to his mother, Mrs. Lucy Maria Powell, at the same address

 

Arthur Powell is honoured on the Oshawa, Ontario War Memorial
