Born at Wrexham Wales to Hugh and Elizabeth (nee Jones) Roberts 

Note that the majority of the pages in the service file spell his first name as Caradog, although a couple of pages were amended to read Caradoc.  His Marriage permit, newspaper accounts and obituary all spell his name as Caradoc

 

Jun 28, 1915

Attested into the 58th Battalion at the Niagara Ontario Camp 

Ø      Number 453900 (this number was assigned for administrative purposes only on February 28, 1922)

Ø      Next of kin given as Mrs Eliza Roberts (wife) of 74 Garner Ave, Welland Ontario

Ø      Previous occupation given as Bricklayer

Ø      No previous military experience given

Ø      Religion given as Methodist 

He had been previously employed by M Vanderburg in Welland Ontario as a Stone Mason and Bricklayer

 

Jul 5, 1915

Medical performed at the Niagara Camp and he was discharged from the CEF as Medically Unfit for further service.  He was noted as requiring dental treatment as well as having Flat Feet

 

Jul 28, 1915

Attested into the 76th Battalion at the Niagara Camp.  His number was 142131.   

The Attestation Papers that were signed are not in the file, nor online at the Archives Canada website.  This date is taken from other documents in the service file.  It would appear that the Battalion’s Medical Officer had a more broad idea of what was acceptable to be medically fit. 

He was posted to “C” Company 

The 76th Battalion trained at the Niagara Ontario Camp

 

Sep 17, 1915

Sentenced to 8 days CB (Confined to Barracks) for being AWL (Absent Without Leave)

 

Nov 10, 1915

The Battalion moved to Barrie Ontario for winter training with the headquarters in the Armouries there.

 

Apr 23, 1916

Embarked the Empress of Britain at Halifax Nova Scotia

 

 

May 5, 1916

Disembarked at Liverpool England and proceeded to the West Sandling Camp

 

Jun 28, 1916

Posted to the 21st Battalion

 

Jun 29, 1916

Arrived at the CBD (Canadian Base Depot) at the Rouelles Camp, Havre France and TOS (Taken On Strength) the 21st Battalion

 

Jul 12, 1916

Left the CBD to join his Battalion

 

Jul 13, 1916

Joined the 21st Battalion at the Chippawa Camp where the Battalion was conducting training exercises and participating in sporting activities.  He was assigned to the Scout Section

 

Oct 24, 1916

While on a night patrol near Lens, he was killed instantly

Dec 21, 1916

Awarded the Military Medal per the London Gazette #29873

 

This action took place in the trenches near the Courcelette Quarry

 

Sep 23, 1920

The Plaque (Dead Man’s Penny), Scroll and Memorial Cross were sent to his widow, Mrs E Roberts at 74 Garner Ave, Welland Ontario. 

Another Memorial Cross was sent to his mother, Elizabeth Roberts at Coedpoeth Wales.  This was returned as she had passed away.

The Memorial Cross originally sent to his mother was sent to his wife c/o the Bank of Montreal, Welland Ontario

 

Feb 9, 1922

The British War Medal and Victory Medals were sent to his wife c/o the Bank of Montreal, Welland Ontario
