Promoted to the provisional rank of Corporal and attached to the 21st Battalion to be employed with the Medical Officer

Embarked the RMS Metagama in Montreal, Quebec

Disembarked in Devonport, England and the battalion proceeded to the West Sandling Camp, near Hythe, Kent to continue training

To be employed with the 21st Battalion’s Water Detail to ensure the men had safe drinking water

Disembarked in Boulogne, France and the battalion proceeded to St. Omer

Prior to proceeding on leave, Corporal Roberts carved his name
into the walls of the church bell tower next to the 21st Battalion
Headquarters in Bouvigny-Boyeflles, France

Married with permission and his next of kin was changed to read Jessie Kathleen Roberts, wife, the Lightwoods, Greenwood Road, Acock’s Green, Birmingham

While obtaining fresh water for the battalion resting in Wailly, France, Corporal Roberts was walking behind the water wagon when he slipped on the cobblestones and fractured the tibia bone in his right leg.  He was evacuated to the No. 6 CFA (Canadian Field Ambulance) for first aid before being transferred to the No. 43 CCS (Casualty Clearing Station)

 

May 20, 1918

Transferred via the No. 42 AT (Ambulance Train) and admitted to the No. 1 Australian General Hospital in Rouen, France

 

May 25, 1918

Invalided to England aboard the Hospital Ship Grantully Castle

 

On arrival in England, he was admitted to the Northampton War Hospital in Duston. 

Transferred to the CAMCD (Canadian Army Medical Corps Depot) for pay purposes while in hospital

 

May 29, 1918

Surgery performed to repair a Hernia that had developed when he fell breaking his leg

 

Aug 9, 1918

Transferred to the Golf House Church Auxiliary Hospital in Brampton, Northampton

 

Sep 18, 1918

Transferred to the Military Convalescent Hospital in Woodcote Park, Epsom

 

Oct 21, 1918

Granted sick leave until November 2, 1918 with instructions to report to the 1st Canadian Command Depot on completion of leave

Attached to the 1st CCD (Canadian Command Depot) for physical training

 

Dec 31. 1918

Appointed to the rank of Acting Sergeant with pay while employed at the 1st Canadian Command Depot
