Medical examination held under the MSA (Military Service Act) of 1917 in Belleville, Ontario

 

Jan 11, 1918

Conscripted into the 1st Depot Battalion, EOR (Eastern Ontario Regiment) under the MSA in Kingston, Ontario

Ø  Next of kin given as Byron Rose, father, RMD #5, Napanee, Ontario

Ø  Previous occupation given as Divinity Student at Albert College

Ø  No previous military experience given

Ø  Religion given as Methodist

Ø  Assigned to the 3rd Regimental Draft

 

Feb 21, 1918

The 3rd Regimental Draft embarked the SS Melita in Halifax, Nova Scotia

 

  

Mar 4, 1918

Disembarked in Liverpool, England and proceeded to Seaford where the draft was absorbed into the 6th Reserve Battalion to continue training

 

Aug 17, 1918

Transferred to the 21st Battalion

 

Aug 18, 1918

Arrived at the No. 2 CIBD (Canadian Infantry Base Depot) in Etaples, France as part of a draft of 262 reinforcements from England and TOS (Taken On Strength) the 21st Battalion

 

Aug 23, 1918

After leaving the base depot he joined the CCRC (Canadian Corps Reinforcement Camp) in Aubin St. Vaast

 

Aug 28, 1918

After leaving the reinforcement camp, Private Rose joined the 21st Battalion as part of a draft of 55 reinforcements and was assigned to “A” Company

 

Sep 17, 1918

While advancing on the Canal du Nord, along the Arras – Cambrai Road, Private Rose was struck by shrapnel from an artillery shell and killed instantly less than 3 weeks after joining the battalion.  He was buried a short time later in the Dominion British Cemetery, Hendecourt-les-Cagnicourt, France

 

  
Following the war, the British War Medal, Victory Medal and Memorial Cross were sent to his mother, Mrs. Byron Rose, Napanee, Ontario

 
The Plaque (Dead Man’s Penny) and Scroll were sent to his father, Byron Rose, at the same address

 

Arthur Rose is honoured on the War Memorial in
Napanee, Ontario

 

 

 
He is also remembered with a grave marker in the family plot
in the Riverview Cemetery in Napanee
