Ø      Previous military experience given as 7 months in the 19th Lincoln Regiment (now known as the Lincoln and Welland Regiment)

Ø      Religion given as Church of England

Ø      Assigned to “C” Company

 

Dec 1, 1915

Sentenced to 3 days CB (Confined to Barracks) and forfeiture of 3 days pay.  The reason for this punishment was not recorded in the file

 

Apr 1, 1916

Sentenced to forfeiture of 2 days pay.  The reason for this punishment was not recorded in the file

 

Apr 28, 1916

Embarked the RMS Olympic at Halifax Nova Scotia

 

May 6, 1916

Disembarked at Liverpool England and proceeded to the West Sandling Camp, near Hythe, Kent

 

Jul 2, 1916

Discovered to be AWL (Absent Without Leave) at midnight

 

Jul 4, 1916

Reported for duty from being AWL at 9 pm

 

Jul 5, 1916

Sentenced to 8 days Field Punishment #2 for being AWL and forfeits 2 days pay, in addition to the 2 days pay lost while AWL

 

Jul 6, 1916

The Battalion was absorbed into the 35 Battalion at West Sandling

 

Sep 21, 1916

Transferred to the 21st Battalion

 

Sep 22, 1916

Arrived at the CBD (Canadian Base Depot) at the Rouelles Camp, Havre France 

TOS (Taken On Strength) the 21st Battalion

 

Sep 28, 1916

Joined the 21st Battalion who had just been moved back into the front line near the Regina Trench

 

Dec 17, 1916

Admitted to No 5 CFA (Canadian Field Ambulance) with a diagnosis that reads PUO (Pyrexia of Unknown Origin) which is a fever without a known cause

 

Dec 27, 1916

Discharged to duty from the CFA

 

Jan 17, 1917

During the Calonne Trench Raid, Pte Sands received a slight bullet wound to his right thigh and admitted to the No 5 CFA.  After treatment, he was discharged and returned to duty with the Battalion

 

Apr 9, 1917

During the advance on Vimy Ridge, Pte Sands was killed instantly by a bullet to the chest

Following the war the British War Medal, Victory Medal, Plaque (Dead Man’s Penny), Scroll and 2 Memorial Crosses were sent to his widow, Mrs B Sands, at 73 Isabella St, Toronto Ontario.  She received the second Memorial Cross as Pte Sands’ mother had passed away after he had been killed.
