Disembarked in Montreal, Quebec and proceeded to Toronto, Ontario

Attested into the 98th Battalion CEF in Welland, Ontario

o   Address later changed to 212 Hamilton St., Toronto, Ontario

The battalion trained in the Niagara-Welland area in addition to doing guard duty on the Welland Canal

Embarked the SS Lapland in Halifax, Nova Scotia

 

  

Jul 25, 1916

Disembarked in Liverpool, England and the battalion proceeded to Otterpool to continue training

 

Oct 4, 1916

Transferred to the 21st Battalion

 

Oct 5, 1916

Arrived at the CBD (Canadian Base Depot) in the Rouelles Camp, Havre, France as part of a draft of 132 reinforcements from England and TOS (Taken On Strength) the 21st Battalion

 

Oct 16, 1916

After leaving the base depot, Private Saul joined the 21st Battalion in billets in Divion, France

 

Nov 26, 1916

Proceeded on the Lewis Gun Course

 

Dec 3, 1916

Rejoined the battalion from course

 

Jan 17, 1917

The 21st Battalion carried out a large trench raid on the German lines near Calonne Ricouart, France.  When the raid was completed, and the troops were returning to their own lines, a shell landed nearby and killed Private Saul.  He was later buried in the Maroc British Cemetery, Grenay, France

 

 
Following the war, the British War Medal, Victory Medal, Plaque (Dead Man’s Penny), Scroll and Memorial Cross were sent to his widow, Mrs. Martha Saul, 212 Hamilton St., Toronto, Ontario

 
There is a note that a second Memorial Cross was sent, but no name or address given
