Citation reads

On 15th - 18th August 1917.  For conspicuous bravery and unfaltering determination.  On the enemy making a sudden attack, this NCO with another man, ran forward to the point being attacked, and, took up a position on the parapet, using his rifle until it jammed.   Then rushing the enemy he bayoneted several, and broke up the counter attacks.   On another occasion this NCO, being unarmed, accounted for two of the enemy with his fists.
