Attested into the 76th Battalion CEF in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario

Ø  Previous military experience given as 35th Regiment, Simcoe Foresters, Canadian Militia

Ø  Assigned to the battalion’s 1st Regimental Draft

 
The battalion trained in Camp Niagara, Ontario

 
He lied about his age, stating that he had been born in 1897

 

Sep 30, 1915

The battalion’s first draft boarded a train for Toronto to make a connection for travel to Montreal

 

Oct 1, 1915

Embarked the SS Scandinavian in Montreal, Quebec as part of the battalion’s 1st Draft

 

  

Oct 10, 1915

Disembarked in Portsmouth, England and proceeded to West Sandling where the draft was absorbed into the 39th Reserve Battalion to continue training

 

Feb 19, 1916

Transferred to the 21st Battalion

 

Feb 21, 1916

Arrived at the CBD (Canadian Base Depot) in the Rouelles Camp, Havre, France as part of a draft of 649 reinforcements from England and TOS (Taken On Strength) the 21st Battalion

 

Mar 12, 1916

After leaving the base depot, Private Scott joined the 21st Battalion in billets in La Clytte, Belgium

 

May 20, 1916

While the battalion was resting in the “B” Camp near La Clytte, Private Scott was sent out on a work party and while working near the front, received shrapnel wounds to his back.  He was evacuated to the No. 6 CFA (Canadian Field Ambulance) for first aid before being transported to a casualty clearing station for treatment

 

May 22, 1916

Transferred to the No. 1 Canadian General Hospital in Etaples, France for further treatment where he was placed on the dangerously ill list

 

Jun 2, 1916

Private James Albert Scott died of his wounds while in hospital and was buried in the nearby Etaples Military Cemetery

 

  
Following the war, the British War Medal, Victory Medal, Plaque (Dead Man’s Penny), Scroll and Memorial Cross were sent to his mother, Mrs. M. Scott, PO Box 348, Collingwood, Ontario
