Born to Robert and Jane (nee Fraser) Shipley at Hawick, Roxburghshire, Scotland

Embarked the Ivernia at Liverpool England with his parents

 

May 11, 1906

Disembarked at Boston Massachusetts.  Both he and his father remained in Boston awaiting transportation to Canada.  The 1911 Canadian Census shows Frederick living in Welland Ontario with his mother, as his father had passed away in 1907 in St Catharines

 

Sep 30, 1912

Married to Jane Cunningham at Welland Ontario

 

Jul 3, 1914

Jane Shipley (nee Cunningham) delivered a stillborn son.  Two days later, Jane Shipley passed away from complications of childbirth.  Her official cause of death is listed as “exhaustion following confinement and Chorea of Pregnancy”

Ø      Previous occupation given as Machinist

Ø      Previous military experience given as 2 years with the 19th Regiment and a current member of the 44th Regiment

Ø      Assigned to “C” Company

Appointed to rank of Lance Corporal without pay

Promoted to the Provisional rank of Corporal

Embarked the RMS Empress of Britain at Halifax Nova Scotia

 

May 5, 1916

Disembarked at Liverpool England 

After arrival, he was appointed to rank of Acting Corporal and made retroactive to this date

 

May 15, 1916

Proceeded on the Bomb Throwing Course

 

Jun 28, 1916

Transferred to the 21st Battalion

 

Jun 29, 1916

Arrived at the CBD (Canadian Base Depot) at the Rouelles Camp, Havre France.  On arrival he was reduced in rank to Pte as there were no openings in the 21st Battalion for a Cpl.

Jul 30, 1916

Joined the 21st Battalion in billets at the Micmac Camp

 

Aug 30, 1916

Admitted to the No 4 CFA (Canadian Field Ambulance) diagnosed with Pleurisy.  He was transferred the same day to the No 10 Stationary Hospital at St Omer.  The diagnosis was changed to read NYD (Not Yet Determined)

 

Sep 15, 1916

Transferred to the No 1 Convalescent Depot and the diagnosis changed to read Influenza

 

Sep 22, 1916

Discharged to duty and joined the CBD at Boulogne and Classified TB (Temporary Base) meaning that he was temporarily unable to be in the front line and given light duties
 

Appointed to rank of Lance Corporal to replace L/Cpl T James 59502, who had been promoted

 

Oct 14, 1916

Left the CBD to rejoin the Battalion

 

Oct 16, 1916

Rejoined the 21st Battalion in billets at Divion

 

Dec 17, 1916

Appointed to rank of Acting Sergeant with pay to replace Sgt Turner 60008, who had been transferred

 

Jan 17, 1917

Appointed to rank of Acting Lance Sergeant with pay to replace L/Sgt Amourette 59010, who had been promoted.  This would appear to be a slight reduction in rank, but there was no explanation for this in the file.

 

Apr 9, 1917

During the advance on Vimy Ridge, A/L/Sgt Shipley was killed in action

Following the war, the British War Medal, Victory Medal, Plaque (Dead Man’s Penny) and Scroll were sent to his daughter, Margaret Shipley, at Box 702, 77 Crowland Ave, Welland Ontario.

A Memorial Cross was sent to his mother, Mrs Jane Shipley, at 539 South Main St, Welland Ontario
