Disembarked in Liverpool, England and proceeded to the Bordon Camp, near Longmoor, Hampshire

The battalion moved to Bramshott to continue training

Transferred to the 21st Battalion

 

Oct 6, 1916

Arrived at the CBD (Canadian Base Depot) in the Rouelles Camp, Havre, France as part of a draft of 917 reinforcements from England and TOS (Taken On Strength) the 21st Battalion

 

Oct 20, 1916

After leaving the base depot, Private Silverthorn joined the 21st Battalion in billets in Bully Grenay, France

 

Nov 12, 1916

Attached to the 4th Field Company, Canadian Engineers for duty

 

Dec 18, 1916

Rejoined the 21st Battalion from duty with the engineers

 

Apr 9, 1917

During the battalion’s attack on Vimy Ridge, Private Silverthorn received shrapnel wounds to his right shoulder and was evacuated to the No. 4 CFA (Canadian Field Ambulance) for first aid before being transported to the No. 1 CFA for further aid.

 

Apr 19, 1917

Transferred to the No. 22 CCS (Casualty Clearing Station) for further treatment and placed on the dangerously ill list

 

May 1, 1917

Private Howard Wesley Silverthorn died of his shrapnel wounds while at the casualty clearing station and was buried in the nearby Bruay Communal Cemetery, Bruay, France

 

 
Following the war, the British War Medal and Victory Medals were sent to his brother, Fred Silverthorn, Bolsover, Ontario

 
The Plaque (Dead Man’s Penny) and Scroll were sent to his brother, James Silverthorn, Bolsover, Ontario

 
There was no Memorial Cross issued

 

Howard Wesley Silverthorn is remembered on the memorial in
the Bolsover Cemetery

 

 

He is also honoured on a plaque in the Bolsover Presbyterian Church
(note the incorrect date of death)
