During severe hand to hand combat that took
place capturing Hill 70, near Lens, France, Acting Lance Corporal Sloan was discovered to
be missing after the day of fighting. His
body was never recovered from the battlefield and as such, his name is engraved on the
Canadian National Vimy Memorial, Vimy Ridge, France, for those killed during the war in
France with no known grave.
Following the war the British War Medal and
Victory Medals were sent to his sister, Miss Alice L. Sloan, RR #3 Iona Station,
Ontario
The Plaque (Dead Man’s Penny) and Scroll
were sent to his father, W.J. Sloan, Iona, Ontario
The Memorial Cross was sent to his mother, Mrs.
Isabelle Sloan, at the same address
