On the
battalion’s first day in the front line at Passchendaele, Private Smale was killed
overnight November 3/4 by an artillery shell. After
the fighting had ceased, his body could not be located and he is honoured on the walls of
the Menin Gate, Ypres, Belgium for those who were killed in action in Belgium and have no
known Grave.
Following the
war the British War Medal, Victory Medal, Plaque (Dead Man’s Penny), Scroll and
Memorial Cross were sent to his widow, Mrs. Annie Smale, 27 Adelaide St., N., Chatham,
Ontario.
A second
Memorial Cross was sent to his mother, Mrs. Thomas Smale, 233 Second Ave., Detroit,
Michigan, USA.
