Aug 19, 1916

Admitted to the Military Hospital in Shorncliffe diagnosed with VDS (Venereal Disease Syphilis).

 

Aug 22, 1916

Transferred to the Canadian Hospital at Etchinghill.

 

Sep 9, 1916

Discharged to duty from hospital but continued to report to the hospital as an outpatient until October 16, 1916.

 

Jan 4, 1917

Transferred to the newly formed 6th Reserve Battalion at West Sandling.

 

Jan 20, 1917

Awarded 15 days Field Punishment #2 and forfeited 2 day’s pay for absence.

 

Mar 5, 1917

Transferred to the 21st Battalion.

 

Mar 6, 1917

Arrived at the CBD (Canadian Base Depot) in the Rouelles Camp, Havre, France and TOS (Taken On Strength) the 21st Battalion.

Left the CBD to join the 2nd Entrenching Battalion.

 

Apr 2, 1917

Joined the 2nd Entrenching Battalion in Hersin, France as part of a draft of 53 reinforcements destined for the 21st Battalion.

Left the entrenching battalion to join the 21st Battalion.

 

Apr 17, 1917

Joined the 21st Battalion in the support trenches near Vimy Ridge and was assigned to “D” Company.

 

Nov 3, 1917

On the battalion’s first day in the front line at Passchendaele, Private Smale was killed overnight November 3/4 by an artillery shell.  After the fighting had ceased, his body could not be located and he is honoured on the walls of the Menin Gate, Ypres, Belgium for those who were killed in action in Belgium and have no known Grave.

Following the war the British War Medal, Victory Medal, Plaque (Dead Man’s Penny), Scroll and Memorial Cross were sent to his widow, Mrs. Annie Smale, 27 Adelaide St., N., Chatham, Ontario.

A second Memorial Cross was sent to his mother, Mrs. Thomas Smale, 233 Second Ave., Detroit, Michigan, USA.

  The Dresden Field of Honour first had wooden crosses, but later installed the traditional military headstones to honour those lost during the war and buried in France and Belgium.
