Small joined the 21st Battalion in billets in Gouy-Servins, France
as part of a draft of 105 reinforcements

During an enemy bombardment while in the front
lines near Neuville Vitasse, France, Private Small received shrapnel wounds
to his left arm and he was evacuated to the No. 6 CFA (Canadian Field
Ambulance) for first aid.

Transferred to a casualty clearing station for
treatment, but owing to the seriousness of the wounds, he was transferred to
the No. 3 Canadian Stationary Hospital in Doullens, France the same day,
where he died of his wounds and was buried in the Doullens Communal Cemetery.
Following the war, the British War Medal, Victory
Medal, Plaque (Dead Man’s Penny), Scroll and Memorial Cross were sent to his
mother, Mrs. GH Small, Arthur, Ontario
