The draft disembarked in Liverpool, England and proceeded to Shorncliffe where the men were absorbed into the 9th Reserve Battalion to continue training

Transferred to the 21st Battalion

 

Feb 5, 1916

Arrived at the CBD (Canadian Base Depot) in the Rouelles Camp, Havre, France and Taken On Strength of the 21st Battalion

 

Feb 17, 1916

After leaving the base depot, Private Smith joined the 21st Battalion at the front near Voormezeele, Belgium and was posted to “A” Company

Rejoined the battalion during the attack on Hill 70 near Lens, France from leave

 

Feb 28, 1918

Rejoined the battalion resting in Gouy Servins, France from leave

 

Aug 27, 1918

During the advance to Vis en Artois, France, south of the Cambrai Road (now Hwy D939), Private Smith received a bullet wound to his left wrist that fractured the Ulna.  He was evacuated to the No. 8 CFA (Canadian Field Ambulance) for first aid before being transported to a casualty clearing station.  He was transferred the same day to the No. 12 Stationary Hospital at St. Pol, France

Transferred via the No. 29 AT (Ambulance Train) and admitted to the No. 22 General Hospital in Camiers, France

 

Sep 3, 1918

Invalided to England aboard the Hospital Ship Ville de Liege

 

On arrival in England, he was admitted to the Fort Pitt Military Hospital in Chatham

Transferred to the EORD (Eastern Ontario Regimental Depot) for pay purposes while in hospital

 

Sep 5, 1918

Transferred to the No. 11 Canadian General Hospital, Moore Barracks, Shorncliffe

 

 

Nov 29, 1918

Discharged from hospital and granted 10 days sick leave

Transferred to the 6th Reserve Battalion in Seaford

 

Dec 13, 1918

Attached to Kinmel Park, Rhyl pending return to Canada

 

Jan 4, 1919

Embarked the SS Metagama in Liverpool

 

 

Jan 16, 1919

Disembarked in Saint John, New Brunswick and proceeded to Toronto, Ontario where he was Taken On Strength the Military District No. 2 Depot

Discharged from the CEF in Toronto, Ontario
