Arrived at the CIBD (Canadian Infantry Base Depot) in Etaples, France and TOS the 21st Battalion

 

Aug 23, 1918

After leaving the base depot he joined the CC Rein C (Canadian Corps Reinforcement Camp) in Aubin St. Vaast

  

Aug 28, 1918

After leaving the reinforcement camp, Private Smith joined the 21st Battalion Rear Details in Achicourt, France.  The Rear Details joined the front line troops 2 days later in Van Quentin when they came out of the front line action.

 

Oct 12, 1918

During the fighting near Avesnes-le-Sec, France, Private Smith was severely wounded and evacuated to the No. 33 CCS (Casualty Clearing Station) for treatment

 

Oct 16, 1918

Private George Smith died of his wounds at the No. 33 Casualty Clearing Station and was buried in the nearby Bucquoy Road Military Cemetery near Ficheux, France

 

 
Following the war the British War Medal, Victory Medal, Plaque (Dead Man’s Penny, shown below) and Scroll were sent to his father, W.C. Smith, Beauharnois, Quebec

 
The Memorial Cross was sent to his mother, Mrs. Clara E. Smith, at the same address
