Forfeited 6 days pay for being AWL (Absent Without Leave)

Embarked the SS Northland at Halifax Nova Scotia

 

Oct 28, 1916

Disembarked at Liverpool England and proceeded to the Bramshott Camp

 

Dec 5, 1916

Transferred to the 21st Battalion

 

Dec 6, 1916

Arrived at the CBD (Canadian Base Depot) at the Rouelles Camp, Havre France as part of a draft of 147 Other Ranks from England, and TOS (Taken On Strength) the 21st Battalion

 

Dec 7, 1916

Left the CBD to join the Battalion

 

Dec 8, 1916

Joined the 21st Battalion in billets at Bully Grenay carrying out training exercises. 

 

Jan 27, 1917

His father died at Marlbank Ontario

 

Apr 9, 1917

Pte Somerville was killed during the advance on Vimy Ridge.  He was initially buried near the trenches but in 1920 his body was exhumed and reburied in a permanent cemetery at Thelus

Post war the British War Medal, Victory Medal, Plaque (Dead Man’s Penny) and Scroll were sent to his Step-Sister Miss LM Somerville, at Marlbank Ontario.  There was no Memorial Cross issued as he was single and his mother had predeceased him.
