Surgery performed here to correct fracture and remove damaged bone and bone splinters

While walking with aid of crutches, fell and re-fractured his right leg

Awarded the Military Medal per London Gazette #29701

  

Citation reads

For exceptional daring and coolness at St Eloi on the nights of the 8th and 9th April 1916, in leading three parties into "No Man's Land" to rescue wounded comrades under heavy artillery and Machine Gun fire.  After his Platoon Commander and Platoon Sgt had become casualties he displayed great coolness in commanding his platoon in an exposed position.

Ø      Right leg is 1¼” shorter than left leg due to removal of damaged bone

Ø      Walks with distinct limp and with aid of a cane

Ø      Orthopedic boot issued to compensate for short leg

Ø      Pension approved of $204 per annum

Discharged from the CEF at Toronto Ontario 

There seems to be some confusion when he was discharged, as he signed discharge papers on January 25, 1917 which were cancelled.  He then signed for discharge again on February 12, 1917 which was again cancelled, finally being discharged on November 21, 1917
