After leaving the base depot, Private Stewart
joined the 21st Battalion in the support trenches near Vimy Ridge
as part of a draft of 149 reinforcements

Private Holden Stewart was killed in the fierce
fighting at Hill 70, near Lens, France.
The men of the battalion encountered severe resistance and often were
involved in hand to hand combat.
Private Stewart was buried by his comrades in a nearby field, however
when the war ended, his remains could not be located for reburial in a military
cemetery. His name is now recorded on
the Canadian National Vimy Memorial, Vimy Ridge, France for those killed
during the war in France and have no known grave.
Following the war, the British War Medal, Victory
Medal and Memorial Cross were sent to his mother, Mrs. W.J. Stewart, Box 642,
Fernie, British Columbia
The Plaque (Dead Man’s Penny) and Scroll were
sent to his father, Mr. W.J. Stewart, at the same address
