Born to Noble and Eliza Ann (nee Evans) Stewart in Otonabee Township, Peterborough County, Ontario

 

Nov 4, 1914

Attested into the 21st Battalion at Kingston Ontario 

Ø      Number 59916 (temporary number 574)

Ø      Next of kin given as Mrs Noble Stewart (mother) of Millbrook Ontario

Ø      Previous occupation given as Butcher

Ø      Previous military experience given as 57th Regiment for 2 months

Ø      Religion given as Wesleyan

Ø      Assigned to “E” Company

o       This was later reorganized into “C” Company

o       Also note that he was later reassigned to the Quartermaster Stores in the Specialist’s Section

Admitted to the Kingston Hospital diagnosed with influenza

Discharged to duty from hospital

 

May 6, 1915

Embarked the RMS Metagama at Montreal Quebec

 

May 15, 1915

Disembarked at Devonport England and proceeded to the West Sandling Camp

 

Sep 14, 1915

Embarked the St Seiriol at Folkstone

 

Sep 15, 1915

Disembarked at Boulogne France and proceeded to St Omer

 

Oct 8, 1916

James’ brother, Corporal Hiram Lyman Stewart, who had been serving with the 3rd Battalion, was killed in action.  His body was never recovered and he is commemorated on the Canadian National Vimy Memorial, Vimy Ridge, France.

While on leave, the 21st Battalion was granted the privilege of being the first Battalion to enter Germany as a unit to make up part of the occupying force after the war

After arriving back in France from leave, he could not locate the Battalion, as they had moved several times while he was a way.  After several attempts to locate them, he joined the CC Rein C (Canadian Corps Reinforcement Camp) at Aubin St. Vaast.

Rejoined the Battalion in Seigburg Germany

 

Apr 3, 1919

Embarked the SS Western Australia at Havre

 

Apr 4, 1919

Taken On Strength of “P” Wing at Witley pending return to Canada

 

May 14, 1919

Embarked the RMS Caronia at Liverpool England

 

May 22, 1919

Disembarked at Halifax Nova Scotia and proceeded by train to Kingston Ontario

 

May 24, 1919

Discharged from the CEF at Kingston Ontario 

Ø      War Service Badge Class “A” issued, number 277312

Ø      Rank on discharge Private 

He would have later received the 1914-15 Star, the British War Medal and the Victory Medals

Married to Lily Clapham at Peterborough Ontario 

Post war he lived on Perry St, Peterborough Ontario
