The battalion headquarters was in Lindsay, Ontario

In the spring of 1916, the 109th Battalion proceeded to Camp Borden, near Barrie, for advanced training

Embarked the SS Olympic in Halifax, Nova Scotia

 

 
 

Jul 31, 1916

Disembarked in Liverpool, England and proceeded to the Bordon Camp, near Longmoor, Hampshire

 

Aug 16, 1916

The battalion moved to Bramshott to continue training

 

Oct 5, 1916

Transferred to the 21st Battalion

 

Oct 6, 1916

Arrived at the CBD (Canadian Base Depot) in the Rouelles Camp, Havre, France and TOS (Taken On Strength) the 21st Battalion

 

Oct 22, 1916

After leaving the base depot, Private Stinson joined the 21st Battalion in Division Reserve in Bully Grenay

 

May 9, 1917

While the battalion was in the front line trenches east of Vimy Ridge, along the rail line between the towns of Farbus and Vimy, they came under an enemy artillery barrage.  The battalion suffered many casualties.  50 Other Ranks were either killed or wounded.  Among them was Private Charles Howard Stinson.  He was first reported to be missing in action, and because his body was never found for burial, his name is listed on the Canadian National Vimy Memorial, Vimy Ridge, France for those killed during the war in France with no known grave.

 

 
Following the war, the British War Medal, Victory Medal, Plaque (Dead Man’s Penny) and Scroll were sent to his father, Mr. J. Stinson, Bobcaygeon, Ontario

 
The Memorial Cross was sent to his mother, Mrs. Joseph Stinson, at the same address
