On attesting, he gave his birth year as 1898, not his actual birth year of 1899, meaning he was still only 16 years of age.

It is noted on his attestation paper that he is “Ordered to be taken on strength by the Minister of Militia.”  The medical portion of the attestation notes that “I consider him fit for bandsman.”

In the spring of 1916, the 109th Battalion moved to Camp Borden near Barrie, Ontario for advanced training

In early July 1916, the battalion moved to the Barriefield Camp, Kingston, Ontario

Transferred to the 252nd Battalion in Lindsay, Ontario

 

Jun 2, 1917

The battalion embarked the SS Olympic in Halifax, Nova Scotia

 

 

Jun 9, 1917

Disembarked in Liverpool and proceeded to Seaford where the entire battalion was absorbed into the 6th Reserve Battalion to continue training

 

Nov 13, 1917

Transferred to the 21st Battalion

 

Nov 14, 1917

Arrived at the No. 2 CIBD (Canadian Infantry Base Depot) in Etaples, France and Taken On Strength of the 21st Battalion

 

Nov 17, 1917

After leaving he base depot, he joined the CC Rein C (Canadian Corps Reinforcement Camp) in Calonne Ricouart, France

 

Dec 2, 1917

After leaving the reinforcement camp, Private Stubbings joined the 21st Battalion resting in the Suburban Camp at Neuville St. Vaast, France.  He was still only 18 years of age.

 

Jan 17, 1918

Transferred to the No. 4 Canadian Infantry Base Depot in Etaples, France and now listed as a Minor

His file is noted as “to be retained at CBD until August 6, 1918.”

Awarded the Good Conduct Badge

Transferred to the Canadian Labour Pool at the CGBD (Canadian General Base Depot) in Etaples

 

Aug 27, 1918

Attached to the No. 9 Canadian Stationary Hospital in Etaples for duty
