His birth registration spells his first name as Lewis

Note that his mother’s maiden name could not be located.  This was a second marriage for her, as her first husband (George Silversack) died

 

Oct 6, 1917

Medical examination conducted under the MSA (Military Service Act of 1917) in St. Catharines, Ontario.  He was declared fit for service.

 

May 8, 1918

Conscripted into the 1st Depot Battalion, 2nd COR (Central Ontario Regiment) under the MSA of 1917, in Hamilton, Ontario

Ø  Number 3109337

Ø  Next of kin given as William Suess, father, Port Colborne, Ontario

Ø  Previous occupation given as Shoemaker

Ø  No previous military experience given

Ø  Religion given as Lutheran

 

Jun 3, 1918

Embarked a troopship in Montreal, Quebec as part of the depot battalion’s 30th Draft

 

Jun 21, 1918

Disembarked in London, England and proceeded to the Witley Camp where the draft was absorbed into the 8th Reserve Battalion for further training

 

Sep 25, 1918

Transferred to the 54th Battalion

 

Sep 27, 1918

Arrived at the CIBD (Canadian Infantry Base Depot) in Etaples, France as part of a draft of 1,000 reinforcements from England and TOS (Taken On Strength) the 54th Battalion

 

Sep 28, 1918

After leaving the base depot, Private Suess joined the CCRC (Canadian Corps Reinforcement Camp) in Aubin St. Vaast, France

 

Sep 29, 1918

While still at the reinforcement camp, and prior to joining the 54th Battalion, Private Suess was transferred to the 21st Battalion

 

Sep 30, 1918

TOS the 21st Battalion

 

Oct 2, 1918

After leaving the reinforcement camp, Private Suess joined the 21st Battalion in the Hindenburg Support Line and was posted to “A” Company

 

Dec 6, 1918

Louis’ father, William passed away in Port Colborne, Ontario of Chronic Bronchitis.

 

Dec 13, 1918

The 21st Battalion led the 2nd Division across the Bonn Bridge as part of the occupying force.  Once in Germany, the battalion proceeded to billets in Seigburg

 

 

Apr 3, 1919

Private Suess embarked the SS Western Australia in Havre for England.

 

On arrival in England he was posted “C” Wing at Witley pending return to Canada

 

May 14, 1919

Embarked the RMS Caronia in Liverpool, England

 

May 22, 1919

Disembarked in Halifax, Nova Scotia and proceeded by train to Kingston, Ontario

 

May 24, 1919

Discharged from the CEF in Kingston, Ontario

Ø  Rank on discharge Private

Ø  War Service Badge Class “A” issued number 279755

Ø  Proposed residence on discharge Humberstone, Ontario

Following his discharge, the British War Medal and Victory Medals were sent to him at Humbestone

The 1921 Canadian Census lists Louis and his mother, Matilda, living in Humberstone, Ontario

 

Apr 29, 1957

The Canadian Voter’s List shows him living alone in Humberstone, Ontario and employed as a Shoemaker.   His mother, Matilda, died September 24, 1938.
