On the night of November
11/12, a work party of 212 men was sent out to work on the front line trench
system in the mud at Passchendaele, Belgium.
While on the road waiting to move into the work area, they came under
attack from enemy artillery. Many men
were instantly killed, and many others were wounded by shrapnel or overcome
by poison gas. Frank Sullivan was 1 of
those overcome by the gas when his gas mask was shot off his face and he was
evacuated to the No. 13 CFA (Canadian Field
Ambulance) for first aid
