While in the front line at Neuville Vitasse, France, Private Sweeney received shrapnel wounds to his right leg and was evacuated to the No. 4 CFA (Canadian Field Ambulance) for first aid before being transported to the No 3 CCS (Casualty Clearing Station) where surgery was performed to remove shrapnel.

Transferred via the No. 25 AT (Ambulance Train) and admitted to the No. 9 USA General Hospital in Rouen, France

Invalided to England aboard the Hospital Ship Guildford Castle

Transferred to the EORD (Eastern Ontario Regimental Depot) for pay purposes while in hospital
