After leaving the entrenching battalion, Private Thornton finally joined the 21st Battalion at the front, south-west of Hill 70

 

Jan 17, 1917

During a large trench raid at Calonne, France, Private Thornton received a shrapnel wound to his left arm that caused a compound fracture of his left arm and he was evacuated to a nearby field ambulance for first aid

 

Jan 21, 1917

Transferred to the No. 4 General Hospital in Camiers, France

 

Jan 24, 1917

Invalided to England aboard the Hospital Ship Newhaven

 

On arrival in England, he was admitted to the Norfolk War Hospital, Thorpe, Norwich

Transferred to the CCAC (Canadian Casualty Assembly Centre) for pay purposes while in hospital

 

Jan 25, 1917

X-Ray shows compound fracture of left radius and 3-4 small pieces of shrapnel at the site of the fracture.

 

Surgery was later performed to remove the shrapnel

 

Feb 16, 1917

Transferred to the VAD (Volunteer Aid Detachment) Hospital in East Dereham

 

Mar 10, 1917

Transferred to the EORD (Eastern Ontario Regimental Depot) for pay purposes while in hospital

Transferred to the Canadian Convalescent Hospital in Monks Horton

Ø  Lower third of left arm is deformed due to fracture of radius bone

Ø  Bone displacement causes outward displacement of left hand

Ø  Left arm and wrist weakness is a result of the fracture

Ø  Condition is permanent but he can resume his former occupation
