Apr 4, 1908

Embarked the SS Grampian in Glasgow, Scotland as a Home Child in the care of the Quarrier’s Orphan Homes of Scotland

 

 

Apr 14, 1908

Disembarked in Halifax, Nova Scotia and proceeded to the Fairknowe Home in Brockville, Ontario operated by William Quarrier from Scotland.

Attested into the 21st Battalion CEF in Kingston, Ontario

Ø  Number 60014 (temporary number 236)

Ø  Next of kin given as Miss Jessie Tyrie, sister, Carlton Place, Ontario

Ø  Previous occupation given as Farmer

Ø  No previous military experience given

Ø  Religion given as Presbyterian

Ø  Assigned to “B” Company

o   This was later reorganized into “A” Company

 
The battalion trained in the Kingston area through the winter with headquarters in the Kingston Armouries

 

May 6, 1915

Embarked the RMS Metagama in Montreal, Quebec

  

 

May 15, 1915

Disembarked in Devonport, England and the battalion proceeded to the West Sandling Camp, near Hythe, Kent to continue training

 

Sep 14, 1915

Embarked the St. Seiriol in Folkestone


 

Sep 15, 1915

Disembarked in Boulogne, France and the battalion proceeded to St. Omer

 

Apr 3, 1916

While in the N & O front line trenches near Voormezeele, Belgium, the battalion came under an attack by fish tail grenades and artillery.  Private Tyrie received shrapnel wounds to his head, neck, arms and chest.  He was evacuated to the North Midlands Field Ambulance for first aid before being transported to the No. 8 CCS (Casualty Clearing Station)

 

Apr 5, 1916

Transported by the No. 23 AT (Ambulance Train) and admitted to the No. 15 Casualty Clearing Station for further treatment

  

Apr 13, 1916

Private William Tyrie died of his wounds at the No. 15 Casualty Clearing Station and was buried in the nearby Hazebrouck Communal Cemetery, Hazebrouck, France

  

Following the war, the 1914-15 Star, British War Medal, Victory Medal, Plaque (Dead Man’s Penny) and Scroll were sent to his sister, Jessie Tyrie, Carleton Place, Ontario

There was no Memorial Cross issued.
