July to December - 1914

  • I arrived in Canada at 10:30 AM, July 19th  and stayed in Quebec for the night.
  •
  • I left at 12 noon on the 20th and arrived in Montreal at 7:00PM, leaving at 8:30PM and arriving in Ottawa at 10:50PM.   I stayed at my Cousin’s.
  •
  • I went about with Henry (Older brother) for a few days and joined the Dominion Police on July 27th.

  • I left the Dominion Police on October 26th and joined the Governor General’s Footguards in Ottawa on November 1rst.
  •
  • I left for Kingston on November 2nd and went to the Cereal Barracks.
  •
  • The 46th joined the G.G.F.G. and we were all made one company viz: “G” Company.
  •
  • I was made Acting Sergeant on Nov. 6th and full Sergeant on Nov. 10th.  We went for marches along the shores of Lake Ontario (North side) every other day.  The first snow fell on December 10th-2 inches in 3 hours.  The wind was very cutting across the Lake which is 75 miles across at one place.

  • I visited Ottawa, on leave, from November 12th-15th.  I saw Henry who has been married since I have been away (November 12th) and he seems happy enough.
  •
  • The Duke of Connaught visited us at Kingston and inspected us on Dec. 6th. He is very impressive and showed strength.
  •
  • I played football on December 1st  and was injured. I sprained the leaders and muscles of my right thigh causing hemorrhaging of the knee. I was in hospital for 10 days, spending Christmas there-rather rough, and came out on the last day of the old year. I obtained leave for the New Year’s holiday (1915) and spent it in Ottawa.
