December 1915

 

Wednesday December 1st  
  • More fatigues, all day.
  • Lads having an awful time.
  • Awfully fatiguing…
  • Received letters.
Thursday December 2nd
  • Took over the A La Brasserie Guard
  • Plenty of fatigues
  • Wrote letters.
Friday December 3rd
  • Plenty of noise.
  • No news of the outside world.
  • Inspection of Rifles
  • New orders about saluting.
Saturday December 4th
  • Aero planes at work
  • Left for La Clytte to be C. L. M. Sgt. for two weeks.
  • Received letters and wrote 20 letters and P.C.’s
Sunday December 5th
  • A little noise from guns
  • New orders. Transport all on the move.
  • Saw Jack off at 3:15 PM
  • Had tea at 7:30 PM with him.
Monday December 6th
  • Things very quiet.
  • Tent almost blown over.
  • Sent Xmas cards.
  • Boys in first line again.
  • Am still with Jack.
  • Had a dandy supper.
  • Plenty of rain.
Tuesday December 7th
  • Lovely morning.
  • Transport on the move.
  • Repaired tent.
  • Artillery duel all day.
  • Horse very restive.
  • Received letters.
Wednesday December 8th
  • Dandy day.
  • Went to village.
  • Awful noise of artillery.
  • Big Lizzies going on left
  • Kept up all night.
Thursday December 9th
  • Rain all day!
  • Old Jack wet through.
  • Some pleasure to look forward to …believe me!
  • Bombardment fierce.
  • Wrote and sent Xmas cards.
Friday December 10th
  • Morning close and windy.
  • Lads out of trenches in billets.
  • So dark, I cannot see an inch in front.
Saturday, December 11th
  • Very stormy and dark
  • Awful weather, but am still smiling.
  • German guns speaking.
  • Rained all day.
Sunday, December 12th
  • Divine Service
  • Rainy and windy
  • Shells very near.
  • With Jack all day.
  • Artillery duels at night
  • Kept up all night.
Monday December 13th
  • Quiet all day
  • Awful rain and mud
  • Artillery opened at night
  • Kept up all night
Tuesday December 14th 
  • Nice and quiet
  • Received letters
  • Wrote home to girl
Wednesday December 15th
  • Little doing
  • Went to village with Jack
  • Had a good time
  • Received lots of letters.
Thursday December 16th
  • Quiet all day.
  • Lads went to trenches
  • Took provisions to trenches first, then to Ridgewood.
  • Pleasant journey back.
Friday December 17th
  • Morning fine
  • Went for a ride
  • Heavy bombardment
  • Took rations to trenches
  • Horse uneasy
Saturday December 18th
  • Rain all night but morning fine
  • Received letters
  • Germans bombarding but doing little damage.
Sunday December 19th
  • Awakened by shells at 4:00 AM
  • Rifle fire, machine gun fire, and artillery fire going like Hell.
  • Kept on all day.
Monday December 20th
  • Artillery all night
  • Stand to  till mid-morning
  • Riding back from front line, shells bursting all around.
Tuesday December 21st
  • Holes made by shells awkward for transport
  • My horse lame-had to ride on transport
  • Rats about a foot long running over me all night.
Wednesday December 22nd
  • Nothing unusual
  • Took rations to first line and saw the boys
  • Plenty of mud
  • Shells from Germans over-No harm done
  • No mail
Thursday December 23rd
  • Still quiet
  • Germans massing in front of us
  • Something doing soon…
  • Saw Jack, Bob, Jealous, Smith, Ward, and MacDonald
Friday December 24th
  • Quiet but wet
  • Christmas Eve under unusual circumstances
  • Very wet under foot
  • Took rations up and saw Jack
Saturday December 25th
  • Christmas Day
  • Lovely morning-quiet!
  • No post for four days-ports closed.
  • Fairly quiet
  • Saw Jack, had a fair time
  • Bed early
Sunday December 26th
  • Fine morning
  • Went to P.P.C.L.I. and saw Lieut. Newcombe (ex-21st BN)
  • Day rather quiet
  • Took rations up to Coy
Monday December 27th
  • Artillery duel going on
  • Rumours about leave
  • Went for a ride
  • Things fairly quiet
  • Went to Bailleue
  • Saw rations to trenches
  • Received letters
Tuesday December 28th
  • Wrote lots of letters
  • Horses inoculated
  • Ammunition wagons on the move
  • Shells dropping close
  • No damage done
Wednesday December 29th
  • Artillery duel all day
  • Shells dropping on La Clytte killing 3 and injuring 6
  • Boys killed and wounded in front line
  • Rain……….
Thursday December 30th
  • Fairly quiet all day
  • A few hit…not badly
  • Saw rations up
  • Artillery awful from 8:00 PM upwards
  • Weather not bad
  • Received letters
Friday December 31st
  • Fierce bombardment all day
  • Taking rations up to first line and was nearly unseated by the horse
  • Plenty of rain
  • Another different New Year.
