July 1915

 

Thursday, July1st 
  • Parades as usual and sports as yesterday.
  • Dominion Day in Canada therefore a holiday.
  • Stayed and wrote letters.
Friday,
July 2nd
  • Drill as usual.
  • Folkestone in the evening and had a great time.
Saturday, July 3rd
  • Manoeuvres in the morning.
  • Afternoon and evening in Dover with QM Sergt. Fee.
  • Splendid time-just dandy.
Sunday, July 4th
  • Church parade at 9 AM.
  • Lads went to London and I went for a stroll with QM Sgt. J. Fee.
  • Quite enjoyed the scenery.
Monday, July 5th
  • Once more plenty of drills and all day manoeuvres.
  • At 7 PM I took over Guard so I had to keep awake for 24 hours.
Tuesday, July 6th
  • On Guard
  • Had a long dreary day. The Battalion was out so times seemed long.
  • Received box of candy from Hilda- Ottawa, also letters.
Wednesday, July 7th
  • Field day Battalion attack and marched 8 miles after operations.
  • Very wet and dirty.
  • Plenty of aeroplanes about.
Thursday, July 8th
  • Drill as usual and afternoon maneouvres-plenty of rain.
  • Received letters and answered 6 and sent PC’s also.
Friday,
July 9th
  • Usual parades.
  • Fine weather and no water in camp.
  • Stayed in camp.
Saturday, July 10th
  • March from 6:30AM to 12 noon.
  • Had a pleasant time at Hythe and Folkestone.
  • Plenty of rain.
Sunday, July 11th
  • Church parade at 9 AM on 21st square.
  • Fine sermon.
  • Walked to Hythe and Folkestone and back.
Monday, July 12th
  • Field day made great.
  • Charged and took 2 trenches from Right Half.
  • Umpire Colonel Hughes.
  • Stayed in camp and wrote letters.
Tuesday, July 13th
  • Great field day.  The 21st beat the 20th in an attack.
  • Headed by Lord Brooke , Colonel of the 4th Brigade.
  • March at 5:30PM.
  • Fine day but rather warm.
Wednesday, July 14th
  • Field day starting at 7:30AM and concluding at 5 PM.
  • Plenty of rain.
  • Stayed in camp at night.
Thursday, July 15th
  • Muster parade at 9:00AM.
  • Summer House Hill in afternoon.
  • Plenty of rain.
  • Staying in and wrote letters-received two letters.
Friday,
July 16th
  • Arose at 5:30AM.
  • Marched passed in order at Lusen’s Hospital-Lord Brooke taking salutes.
Saturday, July 17th
  • Marched past receiving orders.
  • General Sam Hughes and Hon. Sir F. Borden and celebrities.
  • Whole 2nd    Division.
Sunday, July 18th
  • Church parade at 9:00AM.
  • Strolled around about with QM Sgt J. Fee, Sgt. Jealous, and  Sgt. MacDonald.
  • Hythe in the evening-wet through.
Monday, July 19th
  • Parade as usual.
  • Heavy marching order, rather warm.
  • Rumours about going to France and also to Constantinople.
  • Received one letter.
Tuesday, July 20th
  • Marched to Ashford, about 20 miles.
  • Went to Folkestone with my friend QM Sgt. J. Fee and had a dandy time.
Wednesday, July 21st
  • Bayonet fighting all day but stayed in barracks owing to bad feet.
  • No letters…
Thursday, July 22nd
  • Parade full kit at 7:30AM.
  • Out all day.
  • Very wet and the Boys are wet through.
  • Took over Guard at 7:00PM.
  • Missed a nice party at Folkestone.
Friday,
July 23rd
  • Guard-12 prisoners.
  • Quiet day.
  • Battalion out all day.
  • Folkestone in the evening-dandy time.
Saturday, July 24th
  • Paraded at 7:30AM.
  • Bayonet fighting.
  • Left after dinner for London.
  • Saw the girl at 4PM.
Sunday, July 25th
  • Went about with the boys and saw girls and other people in the afternoon.
  • Girl came home in the evening and had a good time.  Good singers!
Monday, July 26th
  • Fighting retiring action.
  • Platoon took 2 prisoners, 8 red flags, and 1 blue flag.
  • Returned to camp at 6 PM & stayed in at night.
Tuesday, July 27th
  • Skirmishing miles out.
  • Got wet through but had a decent day.
  • Obtained a pass and left for home.
Wednesday, July 28th
  • Visited friends and was visited by others.
  • Got with girl in the evening.
  • Weather lovely.
Thursday, July 29th

  • Saw various friends and went out with young lady and had a dandy time.
Friday,
July 30th
  • Nice and quiet at home. Did gardening and took time to relax.
  • Evening out with girl-lovely weather.
Saturday, July 31st
  • Went to London with Frank.  Ada, Frank, & I went to the Aldwych Theatre and saw “Pete”.
