During the severe fighting at the strongly defended sugar factory, south of Courcelette, France, Captain Waddell received shrapnel wounds to his right shoulder and both legs.  He was evacuated to a field ambulance for first aid before being transported to a casualty clearing station

Transferred to the St. John Ambulance Brigade Hospital in Etaples, France

Invalided to England aboard the Hospital Ship Stad Antwerpen
