William "Willie" Wycliffe Weller

Medical examination held under the MSA (Military Service Act) of 1917 in Trenton, Ontario

 

Jan 23, 1918

Conscripted into the 1st Depot Battalion, EOR (Eastern Ontario Regiment) under the MSA in Kingston, Ontario

Ø  Number 3056335

Ø  Next of kin given as James Weller, father, Carrying Place, Ontario

Ø  Previous occupation given as Assistant Cheese Maker

Ø  Previous military experience given as 1 summer in Militia Camp

Ø  Religion given as Church of England

Ø  Posted to the EORD 3rd Draft

 

Feb 21, 1918

The 3rd Regimental Draft embarked the SS Melita in Halifax, Nova Scotia

  

 

Mar 4, 1918

Disembarked in Liverpool, England and proceeded to Seaford where the draft was absorbed into the 6th Reserve Battalion to continue training

 

Aug 9, 1918

Transferred to the 21st Battalion

Arrived at the No. 2 CIBD (Canadian Infantry Base Depot) in Etaples, France and TOS (Taken On Strength) the 21st Battalion

 

Aug 15, 1918

After leaving the base depot, Private Weller joined the 21st Battalion at the front near Fouquescourt, France

 

Aug 27, 1918

Just 12 days after joining the battalion, Private William Wycliffe Weller was killed during severe fighting during the advance on the Sensee River, south-east of Vis-en-Artois, France.  His identifiable remains were not recovered from the battlefield and his name is now recorded on the walls of the Canadian National Vimy Memorial, Vimy Ridge, France for those killed during the war in France and have no known grave.

 

 Following the war, the British War Medal, Victory Medal and Memorial Cross were sent to his mother, Mrs. Laura Weller, Carrying Place, Ontario

The Plaque (Dead Man’s Penny) and Scroll were sent to his father, James Weller, at the same address

 

William Wycliffe Weller is also honoured on the war memorial in Picton, Ontario

 

 

He is also remembered on the family grave marker in the Carrying Place Cemetery
