June 1, 1917

Same as yesterday.  Hospital staff left here this morning for France.  New staff from Canada moved in.

 

June 2, 1917

Went down and seen the town today.  Got paid £1 today

 

June 3, 1917

Went into park today.  Went into Quartermasters Office on typewriter today

 

June 4, 1917

Typewriting all day.  Town here has been a seaside resort before the war but since they began to bombard it everybody of means has moved out of it.  Awful quiet place now

 

June 5, 1917

Typewriting all afternoon.  Aeroplane raid near Shurness around mouth of the Thames.

 

June 6, 1917

Typewriting all afternoon.  Turned wet in evening

 

June 7, 1917

Warning came again today but nothing came of it.  Typewriting in afternoon.

 

June 8, 1917

Examined by Ward Doctor this morning.  Marked D1.  Typewriting all day.  Very warm.

Typewriting in afternoon.  Drew my uniform in am.

Typewriting in pm.  Air Raid on East end of London.  One raider passed right over this hospital.  5 bombs dropped in Margate, not far from here.

 

June 14, 1917

Another Air Raid today.  Typewriting this afternoon

 

June 15, 1917

Air Raid some time between 6.30 & 9.30 tonight.  Typewriting all afternoon.

 

June 16, 1917

Warning sounded about 10.30 this morning

 

June 17, 1917

Raid by 2 Zeppelins on town about 1 dozen bombs dropped on town.  First bomb exploded an ammunition dump on Pier.  One Zeppelin brought down.

Typewriting all day

 

June 19, 1917

Was examined by Doctor today and paid £10 for my sick leave

 

June 20, 1917

Left hospital at 9 o’clock and got train at 10 am arrived in London 12 noon

In London

 

June 22, 1917

In London.  Went & seen a zoological garden in NW London

 

June 23, 1917

Left London at 11.50 am, arrived Liverpool at about 4.30 pm.  Staying at Soldier’s & Sailor’s Club.  Seen the fellows at the Hospital

 

June 24, 1917

In Liverpool.  Went to see Johnston’s people in afternoon and went to Primitive Methodist Church in evening.

 

June 25, 1917

In Liverpool.  Went over to Birkenhead and seen Parker there.  Went over to New Brighton in evening.

 

June 26, 1917

Returned today to London

 

June 27, 1917

In London.  Visited Strand, Buckingham Palace, Hyde Park, Embankment, London Bridge, Tower Bridge & St Paul’s Cathedral

 

June 28, 1917

In London.  Met Pie Smith today

 

June 29, 1917

In London.  Wet all day

 

June 30, 1917

Left Charing Cross Station at 9.10 am, arrived Hastings 12.10 pm.  Went to receiving Company #3 Command.  Billeted in houses.
