September 1st |
- Paraded
to Bushboro Park and inspected by the King and Lord Kitchener accompanied by officers of
army and navy.
- Very
wet.

- Bombing
as usual.
- I
knocked hat off Reg. at 25 yds.
- Wet
through.

September 3rd |
- Bombing
in trenches
- Threw
four traveses.
- Lots
of rain.

- Bombing
as usual.
- Lecture
in hall.
- Plenty
of rain but sun later.

- Anxiously
waiting for girl to come down but am disappointed.
- Waited
about till 6 PM.
- Hythe
with QM Sergt. Ludlow and had a pleasant time.
- Dandy
weather.

letter from girl. I am pleased she did not start to come.

as usual.

- Went
to Sandling and walked about Pointe.
- Saw
transport off.

- Divine Service at 9AM.
- Photos taken later.
- Saw Ada at 10AM.
- Went to Sandling Park.
- Saw Ada off at 8:28PM.

- Company
Orderly Sergt.
- Sports
in afternoon.
- Bonfire
at night.
- Saw
more lads off.
- Sports
and concert in evening.

- More
sports and concert.
- Boxing
and wrestling
- Paraded
at 7:15PM and left at 8PM,.
- Arrived
at Folkestone and took the boat at 11:15PM.

- Reported
floating bombs about-returned to Folkestone.
- Stated
again at 5:30AM and reached Boulogne at 9:00AM.

September 16th |
- After
staying at Aftrope camp we proceeded to Eecke and reached it at 6:15PM.
- Left
Aftrope camp at 8:15PM and trained to St. Omer at 1:30AM.

- Left
Eecke and reached Dranoutre a small village southwest of Messimes which is terribly
battered.

September 18th |
- Took
trenches at 10AM.
- First
line-200 yds. from the Prussian Guards.
- Had
a darn good sleep.

- Wrote
home (postcard).
- Rather
quiet-East Surrey fellows are fine.
- Plenty
of cigarettes and tobacco.
- Have
charge of the boys 1-7 C.

- Just
the same all day-plenty of aeroplanes about.
- Wolverghem
on our left.defended by the Fusiliers who relieved the Middlesex.

- All
rather quiet-rain.
- Plenty
of aeroplanes about.
- Watched
an aeroplane fight-both got away.
- Germans
shouting.

September 22nd |
- Bombardment
all day.
- Heard
about the fall of Lille taken by French-also victories by English and Russians.

September 23rd |
- Rain
and mist all morning.
- Heavy
artillery fire all day-shells bursting all around us.
- Took
protection in feathers.
- A
few casualties.

September 24th |
- Received
two letters.
- Fairly
quiet all day but fierce bombardment at night.
- A
few casualties in the 21st .

- Very
quiet and the sun is shining.
- Villages
about all in ruins.
- A few
casualties (slight)
- Plenty
of rifle and Maxim fire.

- Quiet
morning and no usual service.
- Took
to feathers, later.
- Our
artillery doing fine work.
- Wrote
letters home.

- Same
as usual.
- Left
at 8:30Pm for rest-camp at Dranoutre.
- Wet
under canvas.

- Rested
and started paying.
- Night
went with Platoon to Souvenir Farm .
- No
money

September 29th |
- Quiet
at farm.
- Only
fatigue parties required.
- Received
letters.
- Wet
and extremely cold at night.

- Very
quiet and sunny.
- Saxons
in front of us.
- Artillery
duel-I think ours won.
